April 19th Review

The last chance for the Derby is now over, and it's possible that the finish didn't yield anything interesting in the way of Triple Crown prospects. The winner of the Lexington Stakes (gr. II), Todd Pletcher's Behindatthebar, appears to be a synthetic surface specialist and Pletcher seemed to think they would not proceed to Churchill Downs with the son of Forest Wildcat, who wore down the free wheeling Samba Rooster, who finished second and is not a Triple Crown nominee. Behindatthebar was coming off a win in a Santa Anita allowance race. In his lone dirt start he finished a poor fifth in the El Camino Real Derby at Bay Meadows.

The Preakness Stakes is on the cards for Icabad Crane, who dueled to the wire with Mint Lane in the 1 1/8 mile Federico Tesio at Pimlico Racecourse. The less heralded stablemate of Adriano from the Graham Motion barn, Icabad Crane is a son of Jump Start out of Adorahy, by Rahy. He finished the race in 1:50.83 after being in sixth early and rallying around the turn. Mint Lane led every step of the way until the final strides. Deputyville finished third. Icabad Crane was ridden by Jeremy Rose, best known as the jockey who won the Preakness Stakes on Afleet Alex in 2005.

The San Juan Capistrano Invitational Handicap, a race for older turf horses, highlighted Santa Anita's closing day. A compact but solid field of seven went to the post for the 1 3/4 mile marathon, and although Big Booster trailed pacesetters Victorian Prince (Ire) and Shamdinan (Fr) until the final stretch, he rushed right on by with a dramatic rally, pulling away to score by 2 1/4 lengths. The Mike Mitchell trained son of Accelerator completed the distance in 2:45.50. Rafael Bejarano was aboard for the win. Warning Zone finished second and Porfido (Chi) was third, with defending champion On the Acorn (GB) fourth. The two pacesetters finished last and second to last.
