Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Distaff (Grade 1 )

When: Saturday, October 27, 2007 Post time 4:05 ET
Where: Monmouth Park, Oceanport, New Jersey
Distance: 1 1/8 miles
Purse: $2 million

The Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Distaff produced one of the most electrifying finishes in Breeders' Cup history in 1998. Personal Ensign looked hopeless beaten in the stretch and her 12-race win streak looked in jeopardy, but she closed with a flourish under Randy Romero to win by a nose.

She closed out her career undefeated in 13 career starts.

Like the Classic, which pits three-year-olds versus older horses, the Distaff hooks up the best older fillies and mares against three-year-old fillies. Unbridled Elaine became the sixth three-year-old filly to win the Distaff when she prevailed in 2001.

Bayakoa is the only filly or mare to win the race twice, taking the race in 1989 and 1990.

While the Distaff has produced four winners that went off at better than 30/1, it actually has been one of the most formful races on Breeders' Cup Day. Fourteen winners have gone off at 3/1 or less.

The biggest upset in Distaff history was Spain in 2000. The D. Wayne Lukas trainee returned $113.80 for a $2 wager. One Dreamer paid $96.210 in 1994.

D. Wayne Lukas leads all trainers with four wins in the Distaff (Lady's Secret, Life's Magic, Spain, and Sacahuista).

Pat Day and Mike Smith lead all jockeys in wins in the Distaff with three each.

Inside Information was the biggest winner of the Distaff, drawing clear to win the 19995 race by 13 ½ lengths. She was the lightly regarded stablemate of Heavenly Prize, who ran a distant second in the race, the duo trained by Shug McGaughey.

Inside Information holds the record for the fastest running of the Distaff at its current nine-furlong distance. She stopped the timer in 1:46.15 over a muddy surface at Belmont Park.

The distance of the Distaff was changed from 1 ¼ miles to its current distance of 1 1/8 miles in 1988.

Four have won the race from the front of the past ten years. Escena, Beautiful Pleasure, Azeri, and Adoration all set the early fractions and were able to hold off the stalkers and closers to hold on for victory.

Average Exotic payoffs for last four years:
$2 exacta: $437.00
$2 trifecta: $2,505.00
$2 superfecta: $16,117.00
