John Deere Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf

When: Saturday, October 27, 2007 Post time 1:55 ET
Where: Monmouth Park, Oceanport, New Jersey
Distance: 1 3/8 miles on turf
Purse: $2 million

The Filly & Mare Turf was not added to Breeders' Cup Day until 1999 at Gulfstream Park, where Soaring Softly came from off the pace as the lukewarm favorite to run her foes down late and win by a length under jockey Jerry Bailey.

In the eight runnings of the race, American based runners and Europeans have each won four times.

Two of the wins for the Europeans came from Ouija Board, who won last year's race as well as taking top honors in 2004. She was the beaten favorite in 2005, coming up 1 ½ lengths short of Intercontinental, who pulled off the upset for trainer Bobby Frankel, returning $32.20 for the win.

Intercontinental's win produced the biggest upset, the mare returning $32.20 for a $2 wager.

Favorites have done well in the race, winning four of the eight runnings. The average win mutuel is $14.20.

Banks Hill owns the record for the largest winning margin. She won by 5 ½ lengths in 2001. She came back to run second in 2002 at Arlington Park, beaten 1 ½ lengths for the top spot by Starine.

Bobby Frankel (Intercontinental and Starine) and Ed Dunlop (Ouija Board twice) are the only trainers to win the race twice.

Jerry Bailey (Soaring Softly and Perfect Sting) and Kieren Fallon (Ouija Board and Islington) are the only jockeys with more than one win.

The Graham Motion trained Film Maker has the distinction of finishing in the money three years in a row without picking up a win. She ran second in 2004, third in 2005, and finished second last year.

Six of the eight winners of the Filly & Mare Turf were bred outside of the U.S. The two U.S. bred winners (Soaring Softly and Perfect Sting) were both bred in Kentucky.

Horses bred outside of the U.S have fared quite well overall. In the first five runnings of the race, 15 of the 20 runners finishing in the superfecta were bred outside of the U.S.

In the last three runnings, 4 of the 12 making up the superfecta were bred outside of the U.S.

Winners Banks Hill (2001) and Intercontinental (2005) are full sisters. They are both by Danehill out of the mare Hasili. Both were bred by Juddmonte Farms.

Average Exotic payoffs for last four years:
$2 exacta: $108.22
$2 trifecta: $1,207.80
$2 superfecta: $11,548.10
