Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies

When: Saturday, October 27, 2007 Post time 12:30 ET
Where: Monmouth Park, Oceanport, New Jersey
Distance: 1 1/16 Juvenile Filliess
Purse: $2 million

The Juvenile Fillies is owned by D. Wayne Lukas, who has won the race five times in his hall of fame career, with Cash Run, Flanders, Open Mind, Twilight Ridge, and most recently Folklore in 2005 on his resume.

Lukas pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Juvenile Fillies history when he won the 1999 running with Cash Run, who returned $67.00 for a $2 wager.

The only higher priced winner of the race was Caressing, who pulled off the stunner in 2000 at Churchill Downs, paying $96.00 for the win and topping a trifecta payoff of $18,355.80.

Caressing was owned by Carl Pollard and trained by David Vance.

In recent years, the Juvenile Fillies winner has figured. In fact, the favorite has won the last five runnings of the race, and eight of the last eleven.

The last chalk to go down occurred in 2001 where You was sent off at 4/5 and checked in fourth. Tempera pulled off the upset, returning $25.80 for the victory.

Winning the race makes it just about automatic that the filly will win year-end honors. 20 of the 23 winners of the race have gone on to win the Eclipse Award for outstanding two year old filly.

There have been several photo finishes in the race. The closest was in 1987 when Epitome, with Pat Day aboard, got her nose in front of Jeanna Jones and jockey Bill Shoemaker. The winner paid $62.80.

One of the most impressive victories was Countess Diana, who rolled over her competition to win in 1997 by 8 ½ lengths. Her trainer Patrick Byrne also won the Juvenile that year with Favorite Trick.

18 of the 23 winners were bred in Kentucky. Three were bred in Florida, one each in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

While front runners have won the last two runnings of the race, horses coming from off the pace have done better overall. There have only been three front running scores in the first 23 runnings of the race.

The ideal running style for the winner would be a filly who can rate from mid pack.

The race has been dominated by U.S. based fillies. Only 12 have come from abroad to run in the Juvenile Fillies, the best finishes a fourth place finish by Coup De Genie in 1993, and a fourth place finish by Belle Genius in 1994.
Average Exotic payoffs for last four years:
$2 exacta: $65.07
$2 trifecta: $409.87
$2 superfecta: $4,673.35
