NetJets Breeders' Cup Mile

When: Saturday, October 27, 2007 Post time 3:20 ET
Where: Monmouth Park, Oceanport, New Jersey
Distance: 1 mile on turf
Purse: $2 million

The Breeders' Cup Mile has an international flavor, matching up the best U.S. turf runners against the best European milers. Horses based overseas have won nine of the 23 runnings of the Mile.

Horses in the U.S. have won the last three: Miesque's Approval pulled off the upset last year, returning $50.60. Artie Schiller ($13.20) was the winner at Belmont Park in 2005. Singletary won in 2004, paying $35.00 at the first Breeders' Cup held at Lone Star in Texas.

Three horses have won the Mile twice. Miesque was the first, winning back to back in 1987-88. Lure won back to back in 1992-93.

One of the greatest training feats in Breeders' Cup history was performed by Michael Dickinson in the Mile. Da Hoss won the Mile in 1996 at Woodbine in Canada. After sitting out all of 1997 with a variety of minor injuries, the horse had one prep race at Colonial Downs and returned to win the Mile in 1998 at Churchill Downs, returning $25.20 for the victory.

The biggest upset in the Mile occurred in 1986. Last Tycoon came to the U.S. off wins in two of the three jewels in England's Triple Crown for sprinters - the Kings Stand Stakes and William Hill Sprint Championship to prevail in the Mile off a two month layoff.

The colt, trained by Robert Collet and ridden by Yves Saint-Martin, returned $73.00 for the win.

Owner/breeder Flaxman Holdings Ltd. And the Niachos Family have accounted for five wins in the Mile (Domedriver, Miesque (twice), Six Perfections, and Spinning World).

Freddie Head (Miesque twice), Mike Smith (Lure twice), and Gary Stevens (Da Hoss, War Chant) are the only jockeys to win the Mile more than once.

Two sires have each had offspring win three times in the Mile. The great sire Danzig (Lure (twice), War Chant) and Nureyev (Miesque (twice), Spinning World).

Expect to see another large field in the Mile. Most years there is a full field of 14 runners. The fewest to go to the gate in the Mile was 10 in 1984, the first running of the race.

The average win mutuel over the past ten years of the race is $23.44.

Average Exotic payoffs for last four years:
$2 exacta: $483.43
$2 trifecta: $5,745.05
$2 superfecta: $72,865.15
