John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf

When: Saturday, October 27, 2007 Post time 4:50 ET
Where: Monmouth Park, Oceanport, New Jersey
Distance: 1 1/2 miles
Purse: $3 million

While the Breeders' Cup Classic matches up the best of the handicap division versus the best of the three year old crop, the John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf matches up the best European turf horses against the very best the U.S. has to offer.

The Europeans usually come out on top. Thirteen of the Turf winners were bred in Europe, eight of those coming from Ireland.

Eight of the last nine winners of the Turf made their last start before Breeders' Cup Day outside of the U.S. The lone exception was Better Talk Now, who won in 2004 at Lone Star. European trainers shunned the race that year, held in the heart of Texas. Only one horse in the race that year made their last start outside of North America. That was Powerscourt, who finished third.

The 2003 edition produced history, the first dead heat in any of the Breeders' Cup races. The heater was between High Chaparral (the 2002 winner) and Johar.

High Chaparral was just the fifth three-year-old to win the race in 2002.

Two fillies have won the race: Pebbles won the second running of the race in 1985 and Miss Alleged won in 1994.

In addition to the dead heat in 2003, the photo finish camera has decided six runnings that were decided by a neck or less.

One of those that won a photo was Lashkari in 1984. In the first running of the turf, the colt still holds the record for the highest payoff in the race, returning $108.80 for a $2 wager.

The biggest margin of victory in the race is by Daylami in 1999, who won by 2 ½ lengths.

The fastest winner of the race was Chief Bearheart, who stopped the timer in 2:23.92 at Hollywood Park in 1997.

While High Chaparral is the lone two-time winner, Better Talk Now made starts in three consecutive years. The Graham Motion trainee won the race in 2004, followed that up with a seventh place finish in 2005, and rebounded with a solid runner up finish last year.

Over the last ten runnings of the Turf, four favorites have managed to make it to the winners circle. The average payoff for a $2 ticket over the period is $15.10.

Stalkers and closers dominate the Turf. The last gate to wire winner was Buck's Boy in 1998.

Frankie Dettori is the only jockey to win three runnings of the Turf. In addition to taking last year's race aboard Red Rocks, he won with Daylami 1999 and Fantastic Light in 2001.

The most successful sire in the Turf is Sadler's Wells, with four victories: High Chaparral (twice), In the Wings, and Northern Spur.

Average Exotic payoffs for last four years:
$2 exacta: $260.87
$2 trifecta: $1,351.70
$2 superfecta: $11,065.00
