Fittingly, as Big Brown failed to follow in Affirmed's footsteps as a Triple Crown winner, the race named for that chestnut will be renewed this weekend at Hollypark and a full field of sophomores are expected to try the 8 and a half furlong fray.
Last year Desert Code took them flagfall to that's all and that is the style that Two Step Salsa will try to use to beat this year's group.
The son of Petionville has only been beaten once in 4 outs and the runner that beat him that day came back to win the next start in a $75,000 Golden Gate stakes.
Two Step has never been this far but has a right to get the trip as his dam is by champion Seattle Slew. Trained by Julio Canani, who is having a solid meeting, this one just may get brave if he gets a lonely lead.
Afleet Ruler was off slow last time or may have been closer after running second to Two Step. The colt will have to find the killer instinct though as he's been in a funk since the graduation party.
Behindatthebar was aiming for the Belmont but had a setback and will likely not be in the lineup.
Bingham is in the good hands of Jeff Mullins but his entire resume has been penned in Phoenix and he must prove it on this circuit. He did get a feel of the local Cushion and has a right to run better off that fact alone.
Dixie Chatter will be a handful. He had a perfect tightener in the sprint last time, took the Grade 1 Norfolk here last year and if he reverts to that form, the rest just may be running for second.
Exuma has been carefully managed and is improving hourly. His best asset is his ability to sit fairly close and still kick.
Ez Dreamer is back on the preferred surface after getting a slice in the Will Rogers on grass. This guy has a nice turn of late foot and should be a live longshot.
Rapidity took his share of action in his stateside debut but must prove it in this country.
After Tres Borrachos worked last time, his trainer Beau Greely pronounced him 70% to be in the starting gate for this race. This guy lost all chance in the Preakness and he has a ton of ability.
Trevor's Clever likes to cut it close even on his best days and must prove he can put big races back to back.
Wind's Legacy is still eligible for a non winners of 2 other than race and looms an outsider.
How will the race unfold? Look for Two Step Salsa to be dancing on the lead from the sound of the bell with Tres Borrachos and Dixie Chatter in hot pursuit.
At the top of the lane both of those rivals will give chase, but Two Step holds them both off as Afleet Ruler completes the superfecta.
