According to Jim Croce, you don't tug on superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind, you don't pull the mask off that old lone ranger and you don't mess around with Jerry Hollendorfer.
That's right, King Jerry Hollendorfer has been dethroned at Golden Gate and it only took 22 years to knock him off his high horse and astute horse bettors can look to some trends that the new king relies on to back winners.
They all get beat. Just ask the New England Patriots or Big Brown or Smarty Jones but what trainer William E. Morey did in Northern California recently is pretty much off the charts.
To put things in perspective, Hollendorfer has concentrated on the action at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park for the last 18 months or so and his top stock is banging heads in SoCal.
And Morey did it by running 29 horses fewer than Hollendorfer.
This is no overnight sensation as Morey worked for almost a decade for his father William J. Morey Jr. and obviously he learned his lessons well.
A relative youngster at 34, he has been in the top five in the trainer standings in the last 10 main NoCal meetings and his future is very bright.
To start to get a feel of what horse bettors should look for, think about the things that Pops does well.
Dad is not averse to giving a horse a race off an extended layoff and then popping the next time. When he puts horses on turf, horse bettors can look to turn a nice flat-bet profit and when he gets a horse going good, the runner stays good as he is about 30% at prices with repeat winners.
Just like his Dad, William tends to give horses a race off an extended layoff and then pop the next time. Although he is about 22% with horses in the first start off a 4-month layoff, those return tries are usually with an eye to things down the road.
The youngster likes to switch surfaces to keep his horses fresh and he's adept going turf to dirt or visa versa but he has shown a solid flat-bet profit when he brings a horse back to the dirt after giving that runner some turf experience.
As far as equipment is concerned, he's not a big proponent of blinker action and tends to use other devices to get his horses keen to show speed.
One area where horse bettors need to stay away from with Morey runners is debuters. He is only 2 for 50 with first-time starters in the last 3 years.
The key angle for winning bets when backing William E. Morey stock is that when he dips into the claiming box double up as he's cashes almost a third of the time after a claim.
With a lot of horsemen up north pretty much in the ordinary range, William E. joins fellow trainers Steve Miyadi, Steve Sherman, Armando Lage and Greg Gilchrist as the guys that Hollendorfer has to be aware of in future stands.
