BADA BING

It's only fitting that the founder of Del Mar has a Grade 1 race named in his honor and the Bing Crosby Handicap at 6 furlongs will be renewed this weekend.

Over the years, this has been an important race in the division as Thirty Slews, Lit de Justice and Kona Gold all parlayed wins in the Bing to success in the BC Sprint and arguably one of the fastest horses of all time Chinook Pass won this race way back in 1983.

This year's edition promises to be another slugfest with a ton of talented runners on the nomination list. In alphabetical order, let's give the pros and cons and try to come up with some value for this weekend. But know that Silver Stetson Man, Peace Chant and Spot the Diplomat entered in a $100K claiming optional on Thursday.

Absolute Glory has trained steady for this but has not been out all year and has never beaten this caliber foe. This one will be boxcars if he gets into the starting gate.

Barbecue Eddie loves this Polytrack. He freaked in 2 wins here last summer, came back running on June 28 posting a 103 Beyer and will be set to cook his foes this weekend.

In Summation is the defending champ and he brings a couple of Santa Anita works to the party. He has not been out since April, but is repeatedly proven off the pine and will be a late factor if he suits up.

Johnny Eves went from being a tiger last year; he won half of his 10 starts, to a 0 for 4 pussycat this season. Quickness is his game but condition is a question.

Jungle Prince has not gotten over the surface yet and that's a concern. He also had to take the entire 2007 season off and probably for a pretty serious reason.

Men Only is far from a win machine, he has posted 10 slices in his career with only 3 wins and he's never beaten this kind of runner.

Those that want to give Peace Chant a chance will likely get a price. Lightly raced, but he had his head handed to him last time and has not been close in a stakes and never tried Graded foes.

Sailors Sunset has been disappointing this year, has only 2 races since May and neither was much of an effort.

Silver Stetson Man broke his maiden on this surface with a 96 Beyer, has yet to be tested for class but is in the right hands of Bob Baffert.

In the election year, Spot the Diplomat would figure to have a legit shot but he was out of the money in his other stakes race here last year and was a long shot last time when beating $40,000 claimers. Doesn't get my vote.

The 'Boss' comes in many flavors. You have Springsteen, Steinbrenner and you have Street Boss, the likely favorite in this fray.

The son of Street Cry regressed a bit last time but still had enough in the tank to win the Grade 1 Triple Bend and the fact he won his maiden on the surface continues his momentum.

Thor's Echo chased one of the best sprinters in the game last time in Benny the Bull. Good back in 2006 when he parlayed a BC Sprint win to a DeFrancis score, this guy has also won in a second off the layoff situation in the past.

Winsome Charm will be a price and can't be dismissed. He comes off a career 104 Beyer and could be the bomb in the gimmicks.

So, how will it unfold?

Barbecue Eddie will be spreading the speed sauce early and often but Silver Stetson Man and Johnny Eves figure to keep him honest on the front end.

The second tier of runners might be headed by Spot the Diplomat, In Summation and possible perfect tripper Jungle Prince with Street Boss content to let them duel up front.

At the top of the lane, In Summation, trying to become only the 4th horse to win 2 straight Crosby's, gets first run on 'The Boss' and holds that one off at the wire with Barbeque Eddie having to settle for a slice of the trifecta.

Put you speed helmets on and get ready for a sizzler.
