BEACH BLANKET BINGO

Beach Blanket Bingo was a party film released in 1965 with a cast that included Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello and Don Rickles but for our purposes the bingo we’re talking about is the winning tickets that can be had by playing hot recent claimees pointed for Del Mar.

With the downturn in the economy, the claiming wars at Hollywood Park have been negated a bit but still would not be shocked if those horses that were bought in the most recent weeks come out swinging when the action goes south to Del Mar.

Beau Greely won a 2-horse shake for Miss Bodine on July 10 and this miss could be a player as the summer unwinds. Cut out to be a nice horse by a sire that commands a $60,000 fee, she is already stakes placed but probably needs $20,000 to $25,000 foes to succeed.

She has been sent long of late, but miss just may thrive as a late-running sprinter on the Polytrack at Del Mar this meet.

Bad Boy, Bad Boy what you gonna do, what you gonna do when Julio Canani saddles you?

You heard it here first, this near $200,000 earner will have an excellent Del Mar meet.

Bad Boy broke his maiden on this surface in 2007 with a 90 Beyer, was beaten less than 2 lengths in his last race despite being caught 4 wide and will probably thrive at a distance between 6 furlongs and a mile.

Joe Carl comes to the meeting fresh, dangerous and in the new good hands of Doug O’Neill. The soph has only run one awful race and that was his first vs. winners and it was off a layoff. Recently taken for $32,000, this one came running in that turf debut and if he shows up in a $40,000 fray going a mile and a sixteenth on the Polytrack, he will be looking at a super stalk and pounce kind of a run.

Mike Mitchell is kind of like the E.F. Hutton of the claiming gang. When he dips in and takes a horse, people listen, or they should.

Mitchell’s student Low Gear Power had only won once before this year’s Del Mar meet, but was in the money in 6 of the other 9 starts and could be a great horse to build an exotic wager around.

He has the type of style that may thrive if the speed is being compromised and you know that Mitchell will put him in the right spot, even if that means a drop is needed.

Power showed up the first Sunday of the stand and was a wide 2nd when getting the lead late. This one is primed.

Niccolo Dream recently went from low-percentage trainer James Barnes to the potent barn of Jeff Mullins and that alone means he will have to be watched.

Once this runner tasted the synthetic stuff he has really thrived. He’s 4 for 18 on the synthetic, 0 for 12 on the main conventional track.

Sent too long in the July 12 race at 9 furlongs, if Mullins drops a bit and enters at a mile at Del Mar, get down.

Bottom line for success at the beach is to pay attention to connections and fresh runners that have run well on surfaces like Del Mar.
