Okay, the Travers is over and Rachel Alexandra is the talk of the equine world but you can still get paid if you get a leg up on the 30th running of the $750,000 Super Derby at Louisiana Downs on September 19.
The 9-furlong fixture has been won by some 4-legged legends like Sunny’s Halo, Alysheba, Gate Dancer, Sunday Silence and double Breeders’ Cup Classic hero Tiznow.
Last year My Pal Charlie, trained by Albert Stall, parlayed a mid-pack effort in the West Virginia Derby to a 6-1 upset in this race when he sat third early and won by over 4 lengths with a 104 Beyer.
For argument sake, we’ll take a look at some of the more prominent nominees for this year’s fixture.
This year Stall could be back with his up and comer Blame, a 3 for 5 kin to near $200K earner Curvature. Blame had only himself to blame when he won his last start at Saratoga coming from slightly off the pace to win a 9-furlong $79K stakes.
Soul Warrior just may go favored of a game win in his best race to date in the West Virginia Derby. Three of 7 career, in the money 2 other times, Steve Asmussen has a live bullet here.
Uno Mas is a probable player after winning a $100,000 prep for the race when taking the Prelude at Louisiana Downs on August 15. The long-fused colt will need help up front but the way he won the shorter Prelude suggests he’ll be picking them up and laying them down late.
The now horse and a likely longshot to watch is Electric Alphabet. He’s proven at the distance and gave Uno Mas all he could handle in the Prelude. The Cecil Borel charge has a right to show his class since if you got deep into his pedigree you’ll find over $625,000 earner Wire Me Collect.
Those that are trying to turn Red into green have a vehicle in Red Lead. He has not won since taking his debut but is versatile, brings speed and will try to build on his clever comeback in the Prelude. Red Lead breezed Saturday and his trainer Brandon Bridges had this to say, Bridges: "He galloped out really well, he’s going to be on top of his game."
Left Coast fans will have a play with Massone, trained by Hall of Famer Ron McAnally, who conditioned the great John Henry back in the day.
The colt will be seeking his first stakes win but has chased some good ones and will be ridden by one of the best in Garrett Gomez.
Regal Ransom cost nearly $700,000, won his debut, beat 14 of a vacation to kick off 2009 and will be making his first start since a press and stop 8th in the Kentucky Derby. This wise guy horse has worked a hole in the win at Saratoga this summer and rates a long look at a hint of a price.
Sumo, by Fusaichi Pegasus, has been living out of a suitcase as he has raced at 5 different venues and is fresh from a 5-length win in a $70,000 Saratoga stakes. He got a perfect 3-hole trip that day but has a right to mature with class, as his dam Dyna Da Wyna was a Graded winner and near $400,000 earner.
Girolamo will be an interesting face if he shows. He is lightly raced, but returned at Saratoga at the top of his game.
When the gates spring open look for Electric Alphabet to make the running setting a moderate pace. When the real racing begins at the top of the lane Blame gets first run on the deep closers and is all out to hold off Massone at the wire with Soul Warrior and Red Lead completing the trifecta.
Good luck and you all have a good time in the Bayou.
