COMING ATTRACTIONS

This is the time of the year when those that want to position themselves for a Triple Crown run see what their juveniles have in the tank and this weekend at Hollywood Park the Prevue Stakes at 7 furlongs will be showcased. For that those that hope to eventually get to Kentucky the first Saturday in May this is a possible stepping-stone.

Before we get into some of the contenders this year, let's take a look back to the future and examine previous winners.

Some nice horses have won the race over the years including King Glorious, Copelan, Proud Tower, Cobra King and Lion Heart. Last year it was a case of Halloween coming late as Jack o'Lantern popped at 19-1 in 1:21.89.

Now deceased trainer Richard Matlow knew Jack and he had his charge on time for the Prevue as he was coming off a maiden $75,000 claiming win and came from second to last after breaking from the rail.

The winner of the 2007 fixture also was coming off just a maiden win so don't be scared by inexperience this season.

A total of 19 nominated with trainer Bob Baffert offering up 5 runners and that's a good place to start. His student Conveyance won first crack with a 76 Beyer; Indian Firewater failed as chalk last time but has been very consistent with Beyers between 83 and 85; Macias is the most accomplished of his runners as he is coming off a $60K stakes win and he also has a right to be a good one as one sibling banked over $150K; Marcello got away with slow splits winning a turf miler in his last and could be up against it while The Program has high expectations as a $310K purchase but he found his niche going long and could be in tough on the cut back.

John Sadler has three potential players in Heir Joe, who like last year's hero just graduated in a maiden $75K seller, Hurricane Ike, second recently to Baffert's Macias and Privalaged, who tracked his stablemate Macias last time.

American Lion is an interloper that graduated going away at Keeneland and has the look of a player.

It would be a very quick and possibly unwise return for Gallant Gent, who was crushed in the BC Juvenile Turf.

Get My Fix took awhile to figure it out and could need a bit more talent while Killer Bear was life and death for the lone win and was crushed vs. winners.

Lucky Rave won a couple of times in the bushes of England but was crushed in the stateside debut and another invader Thomas Baines only won once, against 5 foes.

Pico Pico will likely have to come from left field since he has been running in routes while Purse Luva has an edge on most win-wise but recently just wore down $50,000 claimers.

Seattle Ruler's lone win came at Pomona and that form has a hard time transferring and Tribal Face has a nice style that very well could be rewarded at this distance.

The power of the race is likely with Hurricane Ike, who broke his maiden at Hollypark, was far from disgraced by quality juvenile Lookn at Lucky and he figures to relish the tricky distance.
