DAWN OF THE DAY

The dawn of the day, at 10 a.m. on Saturday November 6 will offer the $125K Damascus Stakes to kick off the activity then we get to the meat and potatoes of the early card as the Juvenile Turf, Turf Sprint, Dirt Mile, all with a $1 million purse are followed by the $2 million Juvenile.

The Juvenile Turf is usually inscrutable as babies are going 8 furlongs on a surface that most have not been on in the past. The early lean is to look to the Europeans to do well and maybe at some prices, as that is what they are made to do in the natural environment.

Interactif went to the head of the class as far as the Americans by taking a Saratoga Grade 3 to start September. He had been begging to go long and he drew off with authority. Besides being in the right hands of Todd Pletcher, the colt is kin to several multiple race winners.

Awzaan is a Euro that must be addressed. He took the Middle Park at Newmarket, has tracked the pace in both sprint wins, and the blood is decent as his dam banked 6 figures and is kin to nothing but winners.

Bridgetown just may be the one to beat. He's run well on three different courses and posted his best Beyer taking a G3 at Woodbine on September 19. His dam was a hard knocker and she dropped double stakes winner and over $250K earner Carnacks Choice.

The way to beat this race may be to key a couple first and second and shoot for the moon.

Last year the Turf Sprint was won by Desert Code, who was coming off a seventh in the Morvich at Anita. Backers this year will be looking for a déjà vu run as he ran 7th again in that race the end of September and his trainer was on record as saying it was just a pure prep.

California Flag likes the Arcadia lawn and has a ton of speed but he won't be alone on the top BC Day and just may be fried in a duel.

Fleeting Spirit opened October on Arc Day at Longchamp beating 14 but losing by a neck in a traditional important prep. Already a millionaire, in the exacta in 10 of 13, she may adore California.

If you are looking for a longshot look no further than Diamondrella. She was on the wrong surface on September 12, rebounded in next in a Grade 1 win, has a perfect style for the race and is in the capable hands of Angel Penna Jr.

The hillside course at Anita is tricky to say the least and the key to a win just may be the home court advantage.

The Dirt Mile is a relative newcomer to BC action and last year Albertus Maximus parlayed at third in the Goodwood to a 6-1 Mile score with a 102 Beyer.

Regal Ransom is coming to the race super as in Super Derby. He won that stakes with a 107 Beyer in mid September, proved his class taking the UAE Derby early in the year and has a solid style for the race. He could be a key.

Long shot bettors can point to My Pal Charlie, Informed and Cowboy Cal.

The Kentucky Derby future book chalk will likely be named in the Juvenile and if you are feeling like Clint Eastwood and his infamous line, then Lookin at Lucky just may hold the aces. Unbeaten in 4 starts, off a top figure taking the Norfolk and in the clever hands of Bob Baffert may be all you have to know.

They will have to have their running shoes on to beat this guy but the ones that could offer value include Dixie Band, Aspire and Dave in Dixie.

The next column will highlight the final big 4 including the Classic.
