FESTIVE TIMES

For day in and day out horse bettors, the world doesn't end when the Kentucky Derby is over or when the champions have been paraded before us in the Breeders' Cup as it continues in the trenches, the claimers and the allowance runners around the country.

One highlight players look forward to at this time of the year is the Hollywood Fall Festival at the end of November as it brings together stars from around the country for one more go around at the Wheel of Fortune.

The 3-day Turf Festival consists of 6 Graded races, and 3 Grade 1s. Over $1.75 million will be on the line and the action figures to be hot and heavy.

On a projection play, let's take a look at the possibles for the $500,000 Hollywood Derby and try to push some horse bettors in the right direction weeks ahead of schedule.

We can always learn from history and the winner of the Hollywood Derby last year took no prisoners. Daytona is the name and speed is his game.

Coming off almost a 7-week layoff after shocking at 10-1 in the Oak Tree Derby, the son of Indian Ridge was coaxed along on the lead by Mike Smith and never looked back posting a 99 Beyer and holding off by just a half length when the smoke cleared.

A field of double digits is in prospect this year and the speed contenders that horseplayers can follow right now include Dixie Chatter, Into Mischief and the one to beat in Muny.

Dixie Chatter will attempt to take the same route that Daytona did last year but he was thwarted in his Oak Tree Derby run when beaten less than a length. Similar to Daytona, he was a juicy price that day and he has the tactical speed to be put either on the lead or right off the leaders.

Into Mischief was not in trouble in his recent win at the tricky 7-furlong distance on the under card on Breeders' Cup Day as he won going away with a career 103 Beyer.

Out of stakes winner and near $200K earner Leslie's Lady, this Dick Mandella trainee will be trying grass for the first time if he makes the Derby but he's fired every time, also has the speed to be in the first flight at all times and although his dam was dirt only, she was beaten only a head on grass in a tough classified allowance on turf back in the day.

All Muny does is put on the boxing gloves and beat you into the ground. He's only lost once in his career and he didn't get the best of trips that day.

He will likely have to improve on his career best of 94 in the Beyer Department but he's kin to super sound runner Galloping Gael, who banked nearly $300,000 in a long career and his best asset is that he's proven that he can sit just off the pace and still perform.

Two longshots that horseplayers should be aware of are Art Currency and Great Siege. Currency has the blood on the bottom side to make some noise and he'll be a huge price while Great Siege is a trip horse that figures to be sitting 4 or so off the pace hoping the speed caves in.

The main thing horse bettors should want during the Fall Festival is horses that are still sharp, have not went over the top year and have enough zip to maintain contact early so they get first run on the deep closers.
