When listening to Hollywood Park bettors this meet you may not hear the cry of 'Paul Lynde to block' which was the call on the Hollywood Squares show of yesteryear but you will hear plenty of patrons moaning the fact that the squares and the suits have killed the golden goose.
Nostalgia will be overflowing at this fall meet, as it may be the last hurrah for this time of year at the venue. The owners of the track are committed to running through the summer meet of next year but no determination has been made as to the imminent future.
So let's try to make this meet the best it can be by going over what happened here during the summer last year all also during the fall.
The Cushion Track, different obviously from the Polytrack at Del Mar or the newer Pro-Ride at Santa Anita played very fair last summer as far as post position is concerned.
The best horse could win from in the inside or the outside but the turf played with a slight bias.
The posts inside were much better inside. Sprinting on grass, in events under a mile, posts 9 through 12 were only 4 for 42 the entire meet.
In grass routes, posts 9 for 12 were even worse with a 3 for 61 record.
One thing horse bettors can look to in order to evaluate form at this meet is to compare the Beyer pars of 2007 to any performances early in the meeting.
At the lower level claiming ranks, from $8,000 to $20,000 sellers, Beyers between 81 and 89 would be about right. As the sales prices increase, from $21,000 to $75,000, horse bettors can use a gauge of from 92 to 97 to help evaluate how good or bad a certain performance was.
When you move to the allowance ranks and a horse in the N2X or N3L level posts over a 100 Beyer, than horse bettors know that runner is very talented.
As far as the human ranks and the riders are concerned, there figure to be some shakeups in the top ten, but Garrett Gomez and Rafael Bejarano will once again vie for the championship.
Last fall meeting, both of the Bazes, Mike and Tyler, had stellar meets but the now rider is Joel Rosario, who was clinging to the third spot at Oak Tree going into the last couple of days.
The new face that just may emerge is Michael Martinez. A cousin to venerable Alex Solis, this kid is improving by the hour and at Anita he was winning more races with less mounts than guys like Jose Valdivia, Martin Pedroza and Alonzo Quinonez.
As far as the conditioners are concerned, it's now proven that the steroid situation has not in one bit hurt John Sadler. He took some heat at the Del Mar meet for pushing the envelope but he was in a dogfight to win the Oak Tree title and he also demolished his foes during last seasons Hollypark fall stand.
Horse bettors can look for value in a number of conditioners at this upcoming meet. Beau Greeley is a guy that never gets his props but he had 4 winners at the stand last year and the winning average price was just over $22.
Eric Guillot, who has Nick Hines help him most of the time with his acquisitions, won with half of the 8 runners he saddled and the average payoff was also $22.
The amazing thing that horse bettors should know is that a world-class trainer like Neil Drysdale also had 4 winners last year and they averaged over $27 at the windows.
The successful players this meet will zero in on runners that are drawn well and fit as far as Beyer pars are concerned.
