Just because superstars Rachael Alexandra and Zenyatta are getting all the headlines doesn’t means there is no talent out there and sophomore fillies will try to make that statement this weekend at Del Mar in the $350,000 Del Mar Oaks at 9 furlongs on grass.
Legends Bill Shoemaker and Chris McCarron each won this race 4 times. Taisez Vous and Country Queen won this race in consecutive years and last year Paddy Gallagher saddled Magical Fantasy for the win.
That miss was coming off a wide 5th in the American Oaks and shocked at 42-1 with a 92 Beyer. Gallagher will be represented this season by prime contender Starlarks, who has won two of her last three, the last with a furious finish when up by a nostril.
She’ll need help up front but looms a tough cookie.
There are several others that scream off the page of the nomination list of 15 and the race may come down to a déjà vu run of the San Clemente on August 1.
The nominees: Aldora, a maiden who will be a huge price if connections are brave enough to throw her into the fire. Toss her already.
Continually alphabetically, Chalula One has only run one poor race and that was her first vs. winners. She has a feel of the synthetic here, but is seeking her first turf score.
Ciel Rouge has been patiently handled by Neil Drysdale but would be in tough in her stateside debut.
Dreamalong took a long time to figure out what is going on but she will be shooting for the hat trick, is in the good hands of Julio Canani and has a nice stalking style.
Hameildaeme bounced around in the bushes of Europe but has come to life in America and will be a late factor if she suits up while the other H, Hermione’s Magic, hails from a barn that is having a career year and has tons of upside to her.
Recent Hall of Fame inductee Bob Baffert could saddle Clemente fourth Internallyflawless, an improving miss who only will get better with real estate.
The lesser light of the Paddy Gallagher runners is Lexlenos, a trouble-prone long-fused grinder that will need the trip gods to be on call.
Nan is 0 for 5 on turf and that price will show it on the tote while Saucey Evening is the more preferred of the Graham Motion nominees. This miss has been the beaten chalk in the last pair but she has some back class while her stablemate Shared Account has run two huge races on grass but both of them have been on soft ground.
Of the final three on the list, Third Dawn is the outsider as she just passed the N1X level but she has speed although her best result on grass has been a second.
Strawberry Tart and Well Monied are major players. The former may have moved a bit too soon and was collared late last time while the latter has been a monster once she tasted grass and she has not peaked yet.
When the gates open, look for Chalula One to be pushing a moderate pace joined by Saucey Evening, Third Dawn and Strawberry Tart. The pace figures slow so look for a well-bunched group to be lining up like the Rockettes at the top of the lane.
This is where Well Monied goes to the well and puts in her patented late kick. She will blow by them going 4 wide to hold off Strawberry Tart, Interallyflawless, Starlarks and Saucey Evening on the wire.
