ONE QUESTION

‘You’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

This famous Harry Callahan quote could be the crux of the matter if Bob Baffert’s superstar Lookin at Lucky has anything to say about this weekend’s key race, the Cash Call Futurity.

The $750,000 Cash Call, formerly named the Hollywood Futurity has been showcased since 1981 and will wrap up the fall meet season in Inglewood this.

The change in name is because of the sponsorship with horse owner J. Paul Reddam, founder of CashCall, a lending group that has on its website the tagline ‘loans that fit your lifestyle’ and there is nothing like a mile and a sixteenth juvenile route for a jolt to one’s lifestyle.

Over the decades it has been a harbinger for success the first Saturday in May as 6 Futurity heroes have won the Kentucky Derby, the latest being upsetter Giacomo in 2005.

Preakness winner Snow Chief also won this event as did over $2 million earning monster A. P Indy and Point Given, who won two thirds of the Triple Crown and was the first horse ever to win 4 million-dollar races in a row.

Last year Pioneerof the Nile came off a two-month layoff and a 5th in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile to get up by a nose in this fixture with a 86 Beyer.

This year a monster just may be lurking in the shadows and here are the candidates.

Baffert’s Lookin at Lucky, who ran a winning race BC Day just was outgamed but he ran his eyeballs out in defeat, proved he can pass horses and should get a hot enough pace to rally into in time.

The other Bob Baffert students eyeing the race include Marcello, Conveyance and The Program. Marcello will try to make amends for a recent second. Conveyance has not made any mistakes in 2 starts so far, brings legit speed and will be tested for class.

The Program will have a lot to prove after missing in his first chance in a N1X allowance race. He has speed, but not the kind that will likely clear.

Noble’s Promise will be a player. He has already outrun his $10,000 purchase price and proved he is the real deal with this third in the BC Juvenile.

Make Music for Me will try to do something difficult and that is win an opulent stakes as a maiden. He has regressed twice since chasing Lookin at Lucky at Del Mar and will have to run over, around or through horses to get there.

Get My Fix will try to stretch out successfully as he has just been a late-running sprinter so far. Often, when runners like this go long, they are closer early and don’t have the same punch.

Seattle Ruler is better than his last race indicates. He has much more speed than he flashed in his local seasonal debut and although he has not routed successfully so far, he is bred to run all day on both sides of the pedigree.

“Feelin lucky punk?” That question will probably be answered by the Baffert student Lookin at Lucky. He lost nothing in defeat when beaten a head in the BC Juvenile and if he wins, he will likely enter 2010 as the early chalk for the Kentucky Derby.

Think about keying him on top in the trifecta, spreading, and trying to get a bomb or two in the other slots.
