OPTIONS FOR THE POCKET

The paths that we all take in life are filled with options, and the decisions that lead us to take the right avenues at the right time make the difference between success and failure and the same is true when betting this great sport.

For those shooting for the brass ring in the Breeders Cup, there will be several appetizing things that could virtually change your life if you are right.

Saturday's Ultra Pick 6 will offered a guaranteed pool of $3 million, the largest ever so earmarked. Consider that in the last 10 years, 4 times players have become instant millionaires and a true rags to riches story unfolded in 2003 when a $8 ticket came back over $2.7 million.

A Super High-Five, basically an extended superfecta, will be offered Friday in the Ladies Classic and if nobody hits, the bet will carry over to the Classic itself on Saturday.

The best thing about this day for horse bettors is you don't have to put all your eggs in one basket and shoot for a million either.

In the near quarter of a century that BC races have been run, exactas have averaged just under $250 and trifecta have averaged ten times that much.

The little guy on main street will have his chance to get more involved this year too as 10-cent superfectas will be offered on all by the two Super High Five races.

Ten-cent supers give the modest bettor a chance for action and a chance to get paid. Boxing 4 horses in the super for a dollar costs $24, but only $2.40 for the 10-cent variety.

The way it will shake out for the horse bettor that wants to play but has a limited bankroll is this. A 5-horse 10-cent super box costs $12, a 6-horse box three times as much and a 7-horse box for a dime costs $84.

Now it will start to add up. An 8-horse box comes to $168, a niner to $302, a 10-horse box hits just over half a grand, and an 11-horse box rounds out to a $792 outlay.

On BC Day last year, horse bettors that boxed 7 horses in each race would have been out $924.00 for their trouble.

If they hit 6 of the 11 superfectas offered, a reasonable thing to do considering the 7 horses, a player would have shown a profit of about $1650.

Not a bad day at the office.

The key for horse bettors in the superfectas, whether you are using a conventional wagering unit or the 10-cent unit, is to try to isolate a false favorite. If a player can do that once during the day, he has a shot to have a huge afternoon.

To take this one step further, horse bettor should also consider the costs and the benefits for keying one horse you love on top, with 5 others.

For a mere $27.90, you could key one on top with 5 in dime supers. If you figures one of 2 horses were definitely going to win a particular race, you could key 2 horses with 5 others using a 10-cent unit and the bet would only cost $55.80 instead of $558.00 if using a buck unit.

Remember, horseplayers can think big and have big days without cashing in on your 401K.
