With 14 races, a betting menu that would make Jenny Craig break her diet and with quality abound in every single race, players will be treated to a glorious slugfest in the Cup at Anita this weekend so let's take a look at some longshots that could be put into play.
In the Filly and Mare Sprint on Friday October 24, Psalm has more of a chance than a prayer. She just beat older colts and did it by 8 lengths. Dream Rush has the kind of sneaky speed that just may be overlooked after she stopped at Presque Isle.
The Juvenile Fillies Turf is wide open but Wayne Catalano, a 38% trainer this year, has Sugar Mom on top of her game. Invading April Pride has been right there in 6 of her 7 races and will be a huge number.
Speed is always dangerous in the Juvenile Fillies and Palacio de Amor has that commodity in spades and she will be disrespected on the tote. Irish bred Pursuit of Glory is bred to adore the mile and a sixteenth and she won't be intimidated, she beat 13 horses in her maiden breaker.
Stamina is key in the Filly and Mare Turf and horse bettors can expect Forever Together not to run out of gas late. She just won a Grade 1 going away. Pure Clan has not ducked anybody all year, she gave Proud Spell and Eight Belles all they could handle early in the year and she will be coming on late.
The pinnacle of the first day is the Ladies Classic and since Zenyatta will be a super short number, horse bettors will get value with anybody they use. Cocoa Beach and Carriage Trail, the former unbeaten stateside and the latter coming off a facile win, deserve serious consideration.
Five down, 9 to go and the mile and a half Marathon kicks off the action Saturday, the 25th. Big Booster has classy California connection, won at a mile and three quarters on turf, and has been pointed for this event. Muhannak has won three of 4 this year and 2 have been on the Polytrack in Europe. He will love his light burden of 126 pounds.
Anything Andre Fabre sends out must be respected. His charge Only Answer has a stalk and pounce style that will be ideal for the Turf Sprint. Desert Code, a locally based runner, won on this hill in a similar second off the layoff situation in March.
In the Dirt Mile, horse bettors can look to Doug O'Neill to pull his magic. Both of his charges, Slew's Tiznow and Slew's Tizzy are coming off impressive wins and will be huge numbers on the tote.
A foreigner that could get away on the board in the Mile is U S Ranger. He's been in a funk but stretches out and takes breakfast at the barn of world class Aidan O'Brien. Near $900,000 earner Shakis has only been chalk twice in this country and she'll be a longshot Saturday. He'll be making his 4th start off a layoff. In 2007 in a similar 4th start, she posted her career best Beyer and won at 5-1.
Next year's Derby crop will be showcased in the Juvenile and horse bettors should toss the last race by Azul Leon. He needed the race and was never at ease on the track. In the exacta in 5 of 6 career, Bushranger will be dismissed because he's from England. That may be a big mistake.
The Juvenile Turf is a toss up so take a flyer with Paddy the Pro if you want some longshot action. Troubled in only turf loss, he's bred to run all day. Being game is Westphalia's calling card. He won't be a huge number, probably about 6 or 7-1 at best, but he rates a legit look in all the slots.
Speed kills except in the Sprint and upstart Todd Beattie has a burner that could be forgotten about at the windows. Patience is the key to J Be K. If he settles, the Steve Asmussen runner will outrun his odds.
Shug McGaughey is the 2nd winningest active trainer in BC history and his Dancing Forever hated the yielding grass in the Turf Classic last time. Getting from one place to another is Conduit's best asset; he handles big fields and is coming to the race fresh as a daisy.
Horse bettors that are Curlin fans may be basking after the Classic, but if the reigning Horse of the Year doesn't like the Pro-Ride surface, it could be all bets off.
Team Tiago knows what it takes to rise to the occasion as Tiago's kin Giacomo upset in the Kentucky Derby. If they stagger late, Tiago will be coming. The wise guys also have a vehicle in the Classic with Student Council, who has tons of back class.
Bet with your head, not over it, and take a swing at the fences. Good luck.
