The $700, 000 mile and a quarter Hollywood Gold Cup will be renewed this Saturday in Inglewood and it might as well be renamed the O'Neill Cup as he shoots for his 5th Cup winner since 2002 with his student Informed.
This race is steep in tradition as none other than the great Seabiscuit won the inaugural running in 1938 under George Woolf, who won the first three runnings of the event.
Gallant Man 20 years later was Bill Shoemaker's 4th consecutive Gold Cup winner. Native Diver, a local legend, became the first runner to turn the hat trick in the event with 3 straight wins through 1967.
Exceller, Affirmed, Ferdinand, Best Pal, and Lava Man (thrice) also have their named etched on the Cup.
A total of 13 are aiming for the fixture and we may as well start with O'Neill's Informed. The runner had a coming out party in the California winning going away at a fat 14-1. Bred to run all day by two-time Breeders' Cup Classic winner Tiznow, his best asset could be the fact he can be placed anywhere and still perform. He'll take some money and rightfully so.
Awesome Gem flattered Informed by winning an allowance race since running 5th to Informed in the Californian but with limited speed, Gem will have his work cut out.
Big Booster came into this race riding a win streak last year but has been off form of late. Freshened since April, he is proven off the pine but is yet another that will be at the mercy of how the race sets up and if he can get a lane to rally into in time.
Bullsbay was eased in the 2nd start of the year but won a Grade 3 at Churchill in May and recently ran out of real estate in the Foster. This one has positional speed and must be respected.
Champs Elysses and Mast Track will both be saddled by Bobby Frankel. The former will be trying to win on something other than grass for the first time while the latter is trying to successfully defend his Gold Cup title.
The bad news for Mast Track is that he doesn't appear to be the same horse he once was.
Dakota Phone attempts to connect in a Graded race for the first time but should be gaining late while Magnum has some back class but has been in a funk of late.
Rail Trip has one way to go, and that's to the front trying for a theft while Parading must be respected. This Shug McGaughey trainee is on top of his game and did not ship West for the frequent flyer miles.
Song of Navarone is probably in a bit too tough while Tres Borrachos is fresh, brings class, but doesn't run them alike.
The ladies have a vehicle in Life Is Sweet, who recent chased arguably the best miss on the planet in Zenyatta.
Here's how it may unfold: Rail Trip will make the lead and try to slow them down and lull them to sleep. Informed, Tres Borrachos, Mast Track and Parading will be the closest giving chase while the serious closers will include Big Booster, Bullsbay, Magnum and Dakota Phone.
At the top of the lane Rail Trip will hail a cab, Mast Track will figure out he's not in shape, Tres Borrachos will start wobbling like a drunk and that will leave Parading making the lead with a 100 yards to go.
He'll hold them all off as Big Booster, Bullsbay, Informed and Magnum fight it out to complete the superfecta line up.
