TRICKY TRENDS

Those that are happy about Santa Anita hosting this year's Breeders' Cup for a consecutive time better enjoy it because other venues will probably used for the next several years thus making trends on the Pro Ride a hard thing to figure.

With that said, let's examine how the turf course played BC Day back in 2003 for some inspiration and maybe some clues to what to try to zero in on this weekend.

The Mile in 2003 was a flat out speed melt down. The early one, two, three leaders finished dead last, 5th and 7th respectively. The winner, a sophomore filly coming off a Deauville win, came from third to last to draw away at 5-1. And the rest of the superfecta was comprised of those that were at the absolute back of the pack early at 11,39 and 32-1 respectively.

The lesson here is that don't get oversold by any speeds this weekend and focus on runners that can quicken when called upon.

The Filly and Mare Turf in 2003 was an all Euro trifecta. Michael Stoute trained chalky winner Islington, a 46-1 shot that ran in Ireland in her prior race was second while Aidan O'Brien watched his Yesterday run third at 14-1. O'Brien trained the place and show runners this day.

Value, even with the favorite winning, was in the superfecta as it came back nearly $19,000 and again the first three early leaders finished 9th, 11th and 2nd respectively.

In a thrilling 2003 Turf at a mile and a half, High Chaparral got a perfect trip to finish first for O'Brien but was dead heated by Johar, who ignited from dead last and was right on the wire.

Tactical speed played much better in this race and there again, the super was healthy as one paid about $1100 and the other paid nearly $2,000.

As far as betting trends, know that the Juvenile Fillies has been a haven for chalk. Going into the BC at Monmouth in 2007, the favorite in the Juv Fillies had been successful in 5 straight and Indian Blessing made in 6 in a row.

New York was not the place to look for a Juvenile winner since the mid-90s but War Pass changed all that at the shore. Last year it was back to the home court edge as Anita based Midshipman and Street Hero were the bread of the trifecta with Square Eddie, a Euro who last raced at Keeneland, the meat of the sandwich.

The Sprint may be a place to take a shot this weekend. Traditionally the chalk has under achieved at 25% going into last year and Midnight Lute held off the chalk Street Boss overcoming trouble in the interim.

The superfecta last year came back a minuscule $242 and change but over the years the average super paid over $20,000.

One of the keys to having success this day is to be prepared. With the past performances out early, there is no reason not to be primed and one way to try to succeed is to attempt to bet small until you make a hit, then lay it in late if you really like a horse in one position.

Last thing to do to succeed is don't limit your success, shoot for a huge score and here's hoping you find a life changer out there.
