WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

Okay, the Breeders’ Cup is in the books and no matter how well one did or did not fare, you have to turn the page and roll on.

One handicapping angle to think about as the year winds down is if you can get value gleaning results about what happened on BC Day.

Bettors tend to over bet those runners that did well the rest of this year and early next year and what sometimes happens is that the taxing effort BC Day zaps those runners. Let’s examine last year’s winners and get out the crystal ball.

Last year Ventura took the Filly and Mare Sprint and she had several wins this year but missed as chalk several times including this year’s flop at 4/5.

Maram took the Juvenile Fillies Turf last year but lost 2 of her 3 races this year including the F and M Turf when a big price.

Stardom Bound took the Juvenile Fillies last year and did win 2 of three this year but failed as chalk in April and has not been seen since.

Forever Together failed to repeat in the F and M Turf this year and maybe she just was not as good as last season but Zenyatta put in a performance for the ages and cinched this voter’s nod for Horse of the Year.

She will likely be retired and truthfully, what else is there for her to do?

Muhannak took the inaugural Marathon but went 0 for 8 this year including a Marathon flop.

Desert Code shocked at 36-1 in the Turf Sprint in 2008 but lost 4 of next 5 and couldn’t handled Grade 3 rivals in the process.

The Dirt Mile in 2008 was taken by Albertus Maximus. He took the Grade 1 Donn in his next start, was crushed at 5-2 in the Dubai World Cup, and was sent to the showers proving once again that a taxing win BC Day does come with a price.

Goldikova may not be the same runner she was last year when taking the Mile but she did prove she has a heart of gold and can quicken with the best of them.

Midshipman was treated with kid gloves and was one for one this year beating 4 rivals before his nice try but yet defeat in the Dirt Mile.

Juvenile Turf hero last year Donativum went one for 7 this year and banked less than $80,000.

Midnight Lute has always been fragile and it’s no surprise that he was never seen again after winning the 2008 BC Sprint.

Tough cookie Conduit was super impressive taking the Turf in 2008 yet lost 4 of his next 5, thrice when 9-2 or less but did rebound in stellar fashion to defend his title.

Raven’s Pass spoiled Curlin’s year in the Classic in 2008 but never faced the starter again.

The cautionary tale in this entire recap of what has transpired is pretty obvious. Bettor, good and bad, take stellar performances and sometimes put them on a pedestal when in fact the astute player accepts what is front of him, tries to look for value at every turn and in every nook and cranny and is dying to find that vulnerable false chalk.

Tread light with the 2009 BC performers in the future.
