If you build it, especially with a million-dollar purse they will come and a full field is in prospect for this weekend's Pacific Classic at Del Mar, a race that guarantees the winner a spot in the Breeders' Cup Classic, which is just over 2 months away.
The win and you're in concept is a new thing this year for BC candidates but probably it was not a well thought out promotion and will likely be scrapped for next year.
Before we getting into the players this year, let's take a glance at some of the names of past winners and what preps they used before getting the money at the beach.
Defending champ Student Council will be back for more and last year he was coming off a head beat in a tough allowance race at Churchill Downs before pulling off the 23-1 shocker.
In 2006 the recently retired Lava Man put identical 109 Beyers together as he was coming off a Hollywood Gold Cup victory.
Borrego came from third to last in 2005 at 11-1 to beat Lava Man after getting crushed by that rival in the Hollywood Gold Cup.
The prior year, Pleasantly Perfect used the same springboard that both Well Armed and Surf Cat will try this season, the San Diego Handicap.
Candy Ride, a brilliant horse who's career ended way to early, made his final start a win in the 2003 feature when posting a 123 Beyer. His race to set him up was a turf score in the Grade 2 American at Hollywood and there will be at least two in this year's cast that will also be changing surfaces.
Only two horses, Tinners Way and Skimming won back-to-back Pacific Classics. If something works for Bobby Frankel, the trainer of Skimming, he sticks with it and in both years he had his runner parlay a San Diego win to Classic glory.
Frankel will likely have two candidates this year. One is coming off a Gold Cup win at Hollywood, the other was just beaten a nostril on the grass at Belmont.
Let's examine the field in alphabetical order.
Awesome Gem has always lacked the killer instinct and he will be coming from the clouds this weekend. Things will have to unfold just right for him to get it done.
Barcola set the table for Curlin two back but stopped badly last time to a horse that is way over the hill, Evening Attire.
The Mark Hennig runner could muddle the pace, but not convinced he'll be around at the end.
Delovientos is a one-dimensional runner that is so tough when he gets a lonely lead but would be careful before banking on that prospect this Sunday.
Have always liked Go Between and he's in the world-class hands of Bill Mott but he's had dead aim in his last 3 races and has not been able to get there.
The speed half of the Frankel pair is Mast Track, who has just grown into his skin and has yet to peak.
McCann's Mojave is owned by a friend, Mike Willman, and this guy is a flat-out warrior. Eight and still tough, he should sit a nice stalk and pounce kind of a trip.
The other Frankel, Out of Control, seems better on grass but will be putting in a late bid.
Student Council is not coming to the race off a superior effort while Surf Cat had aim but could not run down Well Armed in his last race.
Well Armed had an excuse for his stateside debut, and his only other loss since 2006 came vs. Horse of the World Curlin. He's the one to beat but he has to be fooled into making the lead at the right time because he waits on horses.
Zappa fanatics will get a brief thrill on the front end and he comes off a clever score, but he had his head handed to him by Surf Cat in the spring.
When the gates spring open, the pace will be contested with at least 5 vying for the top. Eventually that will take its toll and when Well Armed puts away the other speed, he will relax and Out of Control will give Frankel his 7th Pacific Classic victory.
In the superfecta, think about using Awesome Gem, Go Between, Student Council and McCann's Mojave.
