2009 Breeders' Cup Top Contenders
The Breeders' Cup World Championships take place for the second year in a row at scenic Santa Anita Park on Nov. 6-7.
The 14 races offer over $25 million in purses to the top horses in the world and will produce most of the winners of the Eclipse Awards.
Two of the top rated horses in 2009, Sea of Stars and Rachel Alexandra will not be competing, but nine of last year's Breeders' Cup winners return, along with 2006 Breeders' Cup Turf winner Red Rocks.
With large fields, guaranteed Pick 4 and Pick 6 pools into the millions, and many of the superstars of the sport competing, it is going to be non stop action over the two day event.
Among those running are the undefeated Zenyatta, Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird, Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird, four time Grade 1 winner Gio Ponti, and European stars Rip Van Winkle, Conduit, and Goldikova
Here are the top contenders for each race, based on the pre-entries. Final entries will be drawn on Tuesday.
Michael Dempsey and Brian Mulligan will be providing full card selections and analysis for both days of action, and will be available on Thursday.
