The 2007 Breeder's Cup Word Championships will be held for the first time on the Jersey Shore this year as Monmouth Park will be the host track. The event will be held on October 26-27.
For the first time in the history of the Breeders' Cup, it will be a two-day event. Three races have been added to the menu and will be contested on Friday. The remaining eight races will be run on Saturday.
The Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile will be run for the first time at Monmouth Park. The race is for three year olds and upward. The race will actually be contested at one mile and 70 yards this year because of the configuration of the Monmouth Park dirt track.
Filly and mare sprinters will no longer have to take on the boys. The females now have their own race, the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, going six furlongs on the main track.
The third new race is the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf for two-year-old colts, geldings & fillies. The three new additions to the Breeders' Cup each have a $1 million purse.
The three new races are not graded. The American Graded Stakes Committee, the body that controls grading of stakes races in the United States, requires that a race be run under the same conditions for at least two years before it can be graded.
The eight races on Saturday are all Grade 1 events.
Monmouth Park's summer meeting runs from May 12 through September 2. The track will reopen on Wednesday, October 24 and run through Saturday, October 27.
ESPN and ESPNHD will cover all eleven of the Breeders' Cup races.
