Breeders' Cup World Championships to Offer a Pair of Pick 6's

(Tuesday, September 22) Breeders' Cup Ltd. announced on Monday that there would be a pair of all stakes Breeders' Cup Pick 6's this year, one each on Friday and Saturday Nov. 6-7 at Santa Anita Park.

To accomplish this, the Breeders' Cup announced that the $500,000 Breeders' Cup Marathon would be shifted to Friday's card, joining the five races restricted to females.

If no one hits the Pick 6 on Friday, it could set things up for a large pool on Saturday.

"We believe that the schedule of six Championships races on Friday and eight on Saturday will provide better balance to the program and greater betting opportunities for the fans," said Kenneth Kirchner, President of FalKirk International and wagering consultant to the Breeders' Cup. "Fans should find the Pick 6 sequence on Friday and Saturday to be great bets and based on last year's $1 million Friday Pick 6 handle, we could enjoy a substantial carryover into Saturday."

In addition to the six Breeders' Cup races on Friday, the card will start with a pair of $75,000 allowance races, with post time for the opening race at 11:45 am pacific time.

The card will end on Friday with the $200,000 Las Palmas Handicap (G2).

Saturday's card will start at 10:05 am pacific time with the $125,000 Damascus Stakes at seven furlongs, and after the eight Breeders' Cup races will conclude with the $125,000 Oak Tree Derby (G2).

There are five Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" races this week, starting with Friday's Cleanevent Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley, which will be the first Breeders' Cup Challenge race held in Australia.

The winner earns a starting berth to the $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

The Gallant Bloom (G2) at Belmont Park on Saturday will produce a runner for the Filly & Mare Sprint.

Among those pointing toward the Gallant Bloom include last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Indian Blessing.

Royal Ascot will be the scene for three Breeders' Cup Challenge races on Saturday.

The Queen Elizabeth II (G1) is a designated "Win and You're In" race for the Breeders' Cup Mile.

A field of eleven is shaping up for the race, with Rip Van Winkle one of five likely to be sent out by trainer Aidan O'Brien.

There is a pair of two-year-old races at Royal Ascot on Saturday. The Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes (G2) winner earns a starting berth in the Breeders'' Cup Juvenile Turf, and the winner of the Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile (G1) will garner a starting spot in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.
