Champs Elysees Goes out a Champ in Canadian International

(Monday, October 19) Apparently there will not be a curtain call in the Breeders'' Cup for Saturday's $2 million Canadian International (G1) winner Champs Elysses, who will be retired and sent to the breeding shed.

The regally bred six-year-old won his sixth race from 28 career starts and increased his bankroll to $2,864,444.

The six year old was winless in six starts this year and went out with a bang, rallying down the middle of the track in the stretch under jockey Garrett Gomez to run past Jukebox Jerry late to win by a half length, returning $7.20 to win.

He would be a welcome addition to the Breeders'' Cup Classic or Turf, but Garrett O'Rourke, manager of Juddmonte Farms, announced before the race that he would be sent off to stud duty after the race.

"It makes it all the sweeter (that his last start is a win)," said O'Rourke. "And to go out on such a huge win like this, is obviously a huge boost to his stallion career as well. He deserves it. He has been a tremendous servant. He is very game; he is very talented."

He figures to be an attractive stallion next year, having performed well on grass and synthetic surfaces and sports an outstanding pedigree.

He is by the great sire Danehill, who has sired such stars as Rock of Gibraltar, Desert King, Dylan Thomas, Banks Hill, Duke of Marmalade, and Flying Spur.

The mare of Champs Elysees is the amazing Hasili, who may be the greatest producer of all time.

Her offspring have earned nearly $10 million, and she has produced four other Grade 1 winners: Banks Hill ($1.8 million), Intercontinental ($2 million), Cacique ($1.4 million), and Heat Haze ($1.2 million),

In addition, Dansili ($570,686) is a Group 2 winner and is one of the leading sires in Europe

.

Her only foal that has not hit the winners circle is Raise the Flag, who is 0 for 1.

Her latest runner is the two-year-old Deluxe, who is by Storm Cat. The two-year-old filly won her debut at Chantilly in France on Sept. 22.

Hasili's only other runner is a yearling by Empire Maker. She was not bred in 2008.

Champs Elysees was eighth in the Breeders' Cup Classic last year after prepping with a third place finish in the Canadian International.

With a less than stellar U.S. based handicap division, and Sea the Stars retired and heading toward the breeding shed, this guy could have been a factor in the Classic.

We are seeing a growing list of top horses that will not be making it to Santa Anita on Nov. 6-7 for a variety of reasons.

However, Juddmonte Farms will be well represented during the Breeders' Cup.

Twice Over won the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes (G1) at Newmarket, with Prince Khalid Abdullah stating after the race that he would likely be pointed toward the Classic.

""At the moment, we are likely to take Zacinto (Mile), Midday (Filly & Mare Turf), and Spanish Moon (Turf)," he said. "Father Time may go for the Marathon, and Famous Name could run in the Dirt Mile (G1). Then we have Ventura and Proviso, who are in America already."

Juddmonte announced on Wednesday that Midships, who would have been on of the favorites for the Marathon, will miss the Breeders' Cup, will get a vacation and will be back for a campaign in 2010.

In the other two "Win and You're In" races at Woodbine, Lahaleeb pulled off a huge upset winning the E.P. Taylor Stakes, returning $90.70, and Field Commission won the Nearctic Stakes (G2).

Lahaleeb is not nominated to the Breeders' Cup, and would have to be supplemented to the Filly & Mare Turf.

Field Commission made a good late rally to get up under jockey Julien Leparoux to win the Nearctic by 1 ½ lengths, returning $13.20.

It was the first turf win for the Daniel Vella trainee in his fourth try. His most impressive victory came back in May when he won the Vigil (G3) over the polytrack at Woodbine, earning a 105 Beyer Speed Figure.

Jockey Dies at Blue Ribbon
There was sad news coming out of Blue Ribbon Downs on Sunday. Jockey Mark Pace suffered fatal injuries in a spill in the opening race at the Sallisaw, Okla. track.

Pace was thrown from his mount Reep What You Sow and hit the rail on the backstretch.

The 58-year-old jockey just recently returned to riding after a ten-year hiatus. Media reports are that Pace picked up the mount.

The original jockey listed in the entries was Mike Bishop.

Pace showed no mounts at the current Blue Ribbon meeting.

Pace was scheduled to ride Glide Right Along in the second race. The five-year-old mare won the race.
