Del Mar Thoroughbred Club Stakes Schedule

Del Mar opens on Wednesday, July 21 for the 71st season, and the track "where the turf meets the surf" will run for 37 days, with closing day on Wednesday, Sept. 8.

There are 22 graded stakes on tap during the meet, with eight Grade 1 events, along with eight Breeders' Cup Challenge "Win and You're In" races, the winners of those races guaranteed starting berths in the corresponding Breeders' Cup race later this fall at Churchill Downs.

The marquee event of the summer meeting is the $1 million Pacific Classic (G1) on Saturday, Aug. 28.

In addition, the undefeated Zenyatta likely will make her next start at Del Mar in the $300,000 Clement Hirsch Stakes (G1) at Del Mar on Saturday, Aug. 7.

Trainer John Sadler is seeking to win the training title for the third consecutive year. Sadler won 31 races in each of the last two meetings.

Jockey Joel Rosaio led the standings last year with 56 winners, easily outdistancing runner up Tyler Baze, who finished the meet with 32.

Both will get a stiff challenge from Rafael Bejarano, who won the jockey title in 2008, but was injured on the opening day card last year and missed most of the meeting.
