Weekend Stakes Recap

The big Kentucky Derby prep of the weekend, Turfway Park's Lane's End Stakes (gr. II), went to the handsome Adriano, a son of A.P. Indy who powered away down the lane to win by 2 1/2 lengths. Adriano was the third choice in a field of eleven and was ridden to victory by Edgar Prado. He was close but wide early, sitting in fourth behind the pacesetters, then made a move into the turn to take the lead quickly, appearing quite eager to run on. Throughout the length of the stretch Adriano pulled clear, never truly challenged by second place finisher Halo Najib, the race favorite, or Medjool, who finished third. H. Graham Motion trains Adriano for Courtlandt Farms. Adriano stopped the clock in 1:50.20 for 1 1/8 miles over Turfway's synthetic Polytrack surface.

On the Lane's End undercard was the Rushaway Stakes, a 1 1/16 mile contest that can be used as a prep to the Lexington Stakes in late April at Keeneland. Big Glen, who won Turfway's WEBN Stakes earlier in the year but finished poorly in the John Battaglia Memorial due to a poor trip, took the victory by a game neck over the favorite, Miner's Claim. Rene Douglas rode Big Glen for trainer Frank Brothers, completing the distance in 1:44.55. Icabad Crane was third in a field of nine.

The Private Terms Stakes at Laurel Park yielded a close finish between the winner, Double Or Nothing, and Regal Solo and Vanderkaay, second and third by a half length and a neck. It was only another nose back to Cave's Valley, the race favorite, in fourth, then another half to Malibu Kid in fifth. Double or Nothing, ridden by Abel Castellano, Jr., is a three year old gelding by Double Honor and is trained by Richard Dutrow, Jr. The one mile race carried a purse of $60,000 and Double Or Nothing ran the distance in 1:38.66.
