Palm Beach Stakes Wagering Preview

Gulfstream Park will run the 22nd Bulleit Bournbon Palm Beach (gr. III) on Saturday on the Florida Derby undercard. The race is a 1 1/8 mile event on the turf course, and has drawn a wide open field of eleven horses.

With no standouts, several horses have been given a chance to do well here. The morning line favorite is Sporting Art, coming off a flying finish in an allowance on the turf here on February 20th. Although he missed by a neck to Run Sally Run, the added ground should help the son of Doneraile Court. Trained by Christophe Clement, this will be Sporting Art's second race in America after coming over from England.

Run Sally Run is breaking from the outside post for Cam Gambolati and jockey Joe Bravo. Three for eight lifetime with just under $100,000 in earnings, Run Sally Run finished second by a nose in the Inaugural at Tampa Bay Downs in December before rebounding with that gritty allowance win.

Clement has another horse in the race, the talented Proud Citizen colt Flying Dismount. After being transferred to Clement from Todd Pletcher's barn, Flying Dismount has gone two for two with a maiden win in December and an allowance victory in February, both on the turf at 1 1/16 miles.

Bill Mott sends Celestial Comet to the post. A hotly contested allowance race on February 1st at Gulfstream saw Celestial Comet win by a head under Kent Desormeaux, who is back aboard today. The victory came after a dismal 8th in the Tropical Park Derby behind Cowboy Cal.

Moral Compass, third in Celestial Comet's allowance and beaten only a head and a neck, breaks from the 4th stall. Trained by Barclay Tagg, Moral Compass is a son of Grand Slam. He broke his maiden on the turf going long at Belmont in his third start, and since then has been up and down, finished third in the King Cugat, but 6th in the Tropical Park Derby.

Cherokee Focus, making his turf debut, worked a bullet, five furlongs on the turf, in 1:00.1 on March 21st. He is trained by Graham Motion.
