Rebels Stakes Betting Preview

A well matched field will go postward in Oaklawn Park's Grade 2 Rebel Stakes on Saturday. The 1 1/16 mile contest pits nine three year olds against each other, led by Zayat Stable's Z Fortune. Trained by Steve Asmussen, the gray son of Siphon (BRZ) was undefeated in three starts before running into the buzzsaw Pyro at the Fair Grounds in the Risen Star Stakes (gr. III) in February. Three for four lifetime with earnings of $177,600, Z Fortune will be atop most bettors tickets.

Challenging him will be Anak Nakal, hyped by many as a legitimate Derby contender off a strong win in the Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs last November. The Nick Zito-trainee bombed in his seasonal debut in the Fountain of Youth Stakes, finishing eighth. The son of Victory Gallop will be piloted by Joe Bravo in the Rebel.

California-bred Sierra Sunset is back for more in the Rebel after finishing second to the highly regarded Denis of Cork in the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn last month. The winner of the California Cup Juvenile in November, Sierra Sunset is trained by Jeff Bonde. The son of Bertrando is three for ten lifetime.

D. Wayne Lukas hopes to join the Derby trail with Stone Bird, a Grindstone colt who has won two races in a row after four losses in maiden company. He took a maiden special weight at Oaklawn in January by a neck and then came back to take an optional claiming race by 5 1/2 lengths over a mile.

Other contenders in the race include Isaull, second by a neck in the Smarty Jones Stakes but seventh in the Southwest Stakes, and Golden Yank, undefeated until a third place finish in the Delta Jackpot but unraced since then.
