Tampa Bay Derby Betting Preview

The Tampa Bay Derby (Gr. III) is really about one horse.

War Pass, the undefeated Two Year Old Champion of last year who returned on February 24th to nail down an allowance race at Gulfstream by 7 1/2 lengths, should win this. The son of Cherokee Run is highly acclaimed and is the choice of many for the Kentucky Derby this year. The Nick Zito-trainee will be ridden by regular jockey Cornelio Velasquez in the 1 1/16 mile race.

Challenging War Pass are six brave colts who hope to jump into the Derby picture with an upset. Of these, Dogwood Stables' Atoned, who has not started since finishing second in the Remsen Stakes (Gr. II) to top colt Court Vision on November 24th at Aqueduct. The son of Repent is trained by Todd Pletcher, who won the race with Limehouse in 2004.

Big Truck was a highly regarded two year old after he won his first two starts, a maiden race and a New York-bred stakes back in September, but since then he has lost to Giant Moon, Court Vision, Smooth Air, and Fierce Wind in various stakes races, a testament to the competition he has been facing. The son of Hook and Ladder is trained by Barclay Tagg.

Dynamic Wave finished fourth in the Sam F Davis Stakes and before that won a Tampa Bay allowance race in January over the Derby distance of 1 1/16 miles. Gentleman James and Cigar man round out the small field.
