Bay Meadows Racecourse

Bay Meadows holds the distinction of being California’s oldest racetrack, opening its doors in 1934, and the Bay Meadows Handicap is the state’s longest-running thoroughbred race, having started in 1937. Bay Meadows is prominent in the community, coinciding with the beginning of the San Mateo County Fair, before the thoroughbred season starting after Labor Day. On December 1, 2006, Russell Baze became the winningest jockey in thoroughbred racing after winning the fourth race at Bay Meadows.

Bay Meadows seems to be on its last legs, as there are plans to open a new track, and the old space is due to be developed by the city of San Mateo. Bay Meadows is to remain open on a year-to-year basis.
