Fair Grounds Race Course

Fair Grounds Race Course was opened in 1852 when it was named the Union Race Course. The race course was forced to close in 1857, before reopening under a new name the Creole Race Course, in 1859. Its name was changed again in 1863 to its current moniker the Fair Grounds. The track has persevered through numerous changes in ownership and state law over the years, and barely escaped being nearly destroyed in 1941.

Fair Grounds was then bought by Churchill Downs Inc. in 1994, and received a glamorous makeover, only to suffer heavy damage in Hurricane Katrina. It was re-opened once again on Thanksgiving Day 2006. Fair Grounds has famous 1924 Kentucky Derby winner Black Gold laid to rest in the infield.
