Hawthorne Race Course
Hawthorne Race Course was opened by Edward Corrigan in 1891, but was force to close briefly after suffering fatal damage in a 1902 fire. It was re-opened later that year, but suffered many setbacks in Prohibition-era Chicago in the late-1910s. It was given new life after finally being able to open legally in 1922, The track began to see tremendous growth and the creation of the Hawthorne Gold Cup Handicap in 1929 was a major coup for the track.
Hawthorne combined harness and quarter horse racing with its thoroughbred schedule in 1970, but suffered another devastating fire in 1978, which caused Hawthorne to close for two years. It also hosted Arlington Park events in 1985 after a fire on those grounds. Those two tracks are considered the best racetracks in the state of Illinois.
