Hollywood Park

Hollywood Park opened in 1938, buoyed by its brilliant location, close to the Los Angeles Airport. The name Hollywood Park was derived from its Hollywood roots, as many of its founders had ties to Tinseltown. The track survived a fire in 1949, and saw the addition of an on-site card casino in 1994. The track has undergone recent changes, as previous owners Churchill Downs sold it to Bay Meadows Land Company leaving Hollywood Park’s future questionable over the next three years.

There have been many big moments at Hollywood Park in its history. It was the host of the first Breeders’ Cup in 1984, and it returned in 1987 and 1997. Citation became the first horse to break $1 million in 1951 with a win in the Hollywood Gold Cup, and Laffit Pincay Jr. became the winningest jockey of all time in 1999.
