Oaklawn Park

Oaklawn Park opened in 1905 during a time when gambling was a hotbed issue in Arkansas politics. Because of the political strain on gambling, Oaklawn was forced to close and reopen only to close again numerous times during the early 1900’s. Despite these early troubles Oaklawn flourished once they were finally allowed to open for good. The first Arkansas Derby was run at Oaklawn Park in 1936 and has grown steadily over the years to become a fixture for future Triple Crown race winners such as Afleet Alex and Smarty Jones. Afleet Alex holds the Oaklawn Park record after winning the Arkansas Stakes by eight lengths in 2005.
