Pimlico Race Course
Pimlico Race Course opened in 1870 and has become famous for hosting the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes. The race is named for the colt Preakness, who won the first running of the Dinner Party Stakes when Pimlico first opened in 1870. The Preakness and the Pimlico Special are unique races because they are run at a distance of 1 3/16 miles. The Pimlico record for that distance belongs to Farma Way, who set the record time by winning the Pimlico Special in 1991.
One of the most famous races ever held at Pimlico was the second Pimlico Special, which was run on November 1, 1938. In that race Seabiscuit defeated Triple Crown winner War Admiral by four lengths in what some horse historians consider the greatest horse race ever.
