Turfway Park
Turfway Park was opened in 1959 as the Latonia Race Course. The track was renamed Turfway Park in 1987 by then-owner Jerry Carroll. The name change also saw the Park become a more respectable track with the addition of a major Kentucky Derby prep race, the Spiral Stakes. The Spiral Stakes has gone through a few name changes over the years, but is still raced every year at Turfway, and is currently known as the Lane’s End Stakes.
In 2005, Turfway became the first track in the U.S. to install a new Polytrack synthetic racing surface. The new track surface drains water more quickly and also prevents freezing of the track surface. After the new surface was installed the track conditions at Turfway have always been listed as “fast’ no matter what the weather condition are like.
